A man reportedly had to see his wife 'burn alive' after his GPS directed him onto a disused bridge.

Zohra Hussain, 51, died of severe burns after becoming trapped in the car that plummeted 40ft off the Cline Avenue bridge in East Chicago.

Husband Iftikhar Hussain, 61, was reportedly following a satellite navigation device when he drove past signs warning the route was closed and onto a ramp leading to the disused bridge, reports the Mirror.

It is believed the couple were driving to visit family in Indiana and didn't know the area well.

According to cnet.com, a sheriff's office spokeswoman told the Times of Munster: "The Cline Avenue bridge is marked with numerous barricades including orange barrels and cones, large wood signs stating ROAD CLOSED with orange striped markings. There are concrete barricades across the road to further indicate the road is closed."

CBS Local reports that Iftikhar was able to exit the vehicle after the accident and is in Methodist Hospital Northlake Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

According to MSN, the bridge closed in 2009 after deteriorating following years of use from heavy trucks. It has now been demolished and construction of a new bridge to cross the Indiana Harbour Canal is set to start later this year.
