Icelandair has added a rather distinctive new plane to its fleet: an aircraft decorated with views of the Northern Lights.

Part of the transatlantic group, the new 'Hekla Aurora' plane promises passengers a glimpse of nature's most famous lightshow every time they travel.

The Icelandic airline has decorated the new plane with beautiful images of thelights thanks to skilled airbrush artists who worked on the project. Even the in-flight LED light show mimics the natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis, which occurs when electrically charged particles in the sky collide.

The Northern Lights can be seen in a host of colours, most commonly light greens and yellows, as seen on Icelandair's new Boeing 757.

Sightings ofs are most common in late autumn, winter and early spring and are most commonly seen in the Scandinavian countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland.

To celebrate the launch of the plane's new livery, former employees of the airline were invited on board to join the initial journey. Passengers on the celebratory flight left London's Heathrow airport and travelled to Reykjavik aboard the unusual new plane.

The aircraft also flew over Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik which was illuminated as an introduction to the annual Winter Light's Festival, which began last week.

The livery is part of Icelandair's marketing campaign, #mystopover, where the airline allows passengers to take advantage of an Icelandair stopover for up to seven nights at no extra charge.
