Weather forecasters have predicted up to 15cm of snow in parts of Britain as much of the UK will be hit by sub-zero temperatures this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of snow and ice for most of the UK on Saturday and says: "A cold and unstable northwesterly airflow will bring frequent showers to many northwestern parts of the UK, these turning to sleet and snow quite widely. Snow accumulations, with ice an additional hazard, could cause some disruption to travel."

A severe cold weather alert has been issued for North East England, North West England, Yorkshire and the Midlands, while a yellow warning for alert and readiness has been issued for Southwest England, the Southeast and the East of England.

According to The Independent, Central England could see temperatures as low as -2C, with thermometers reading -3C in London.

Laura Young at the Met Office told the newspaper: "It doesn't really warm up in Scotland and northern parts of England all weekend, so there is a very good potential for ice on Sunday.

"Basically, snow and sleet, then it becomes very, very clear, but then the temperatures really drop, and then it freezes."

Cumbria could see up to 15cm of snow, while parts of Devon, the Cotswolds and Chiltern Hills could see up to 4cm.

The Highway Agency has warned drivers to expect "difficult" driving conditions and Public Health England is urging Britons to look after friends, relatives and neighbours.

Chief forecaster Leon Brown at The Weather Channel told AOL Travel the cold Arctic flow below normal temperatures "will last through next week". He says Scotland can expect severe frosts. There will be widespread ice and a risk of snow in many areas too.

"On Saturday night there is a further risk of snow across mid Wales, spreading to the Midlands. Five to 10cm is possible over the high parts of mid Wales, and parts of the West Midlands to Staffordshire and Derbyshire could wake up to 2 to 5cm of snow.

"Sunday afternoon and night could bring snow to South East England. The higher parts of Kent to Sussex may see a spell of moderate snow with 5 to 10cm accumulating, especially the North and South Downs."

Leon adds: "Some snow will also move south across East Scotland to North East England during Sunday with 2-5cm accumulations inland.

"At the moment Monday looks like a dry and bright day for much of the UK, but frosty and icy. A severe frost likely over the Scottish Highlands with temperatures in places below minus 10C.

Another snow risk will develop over the west during Tuesday and Wednesday, possibly moving further east to central Britain, Mr Brown says. The North West faces another snow threat later on Thursday too.

Leon warns that Britons should "be well prepared for snow and ice later this weekend and next week wherever you are."
