A man has been rescued after jumping into an icy river in Idaho.

It is believed the man freely jumped into the freezing Des Moines River, and even swam away from rescuers trying to save him.

The incident occurred on the east side of the river on Monday, with witnesses saying they saw the man jump.

He was seen lying on his back in the water, floating in the freezing water, and clinging onto ice.

Rescuers were forced to don wetsuits and use a special lightweight boat to get across the thin ice to rescue the man.

According to the Daily Mail, Brian O'Keefe from the Des Moines Fire Department told KCCI 8: "Fortunately he didn't get under the ice. But as you saw the challenge of the thickness ... it wouldn't support our body's weight so that's why we brought that new rescue boat that we have that allows us to slide it across ice."

KCCI reports that the man was covered in ice when he was brought shore 15 minutes later, and was transported to hospital.

Back in August, a naked and drunk Oregan man had to be rescued after he fell into a river while masturbating in a park in broad daylight.

Ernest Micheal Kirk, 31, fell into the Willamette River while performing a sex act on a cliff bank in Clackamette Park in Oregan City, reports the Mirror.
