Author Ian Rankin has tweeted his frustration after experiencing lengthy security queues at Edinburgh Airport.

The airport is currently testing a new security hall alongside its existing one, and the process involves an 'airlock system', which lets some passengers through the new lounge, then closes the doors and lets other passengers through the old one, reports the Daily Mail.

The Scottish writer, author of the Inspector Rebus books, complained about the airport's "overrun" system to his 80,000 Twitter fans while he was delayed there on Tuesday.

He wrote: "Hey, @EDI_Airport, one x-Ray machine in use at 7.30am? Having to lock passengers out because you're overrun? Embarrassing."

One user replied saying: "Been going on for a few weeks now trialling some new system, total disaster!has convinced me back to trains."

Another wrote: "@EDI_Airport is truly an embarrassment to Edinburgh & Scotland. Cavalier disregard for public, run like a social club for staff."

According to the Herald Scotland, a spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said: "We're currently in the process of transitioning between our old and new security halls.

"As a result of this, some passengers have experienced a slightly longer security process than we would like. Passengers are not being locked out of either security hall. This is an air-lock process to allow us to run both areas safely.

"We're working hard to ensure our security system works as efficiently as possible. We apologise if this has caused an inconvenience to our passengers and thank them for their continued patience."

The new security hall is one and a half times larger than the current one, and includes new facial recognition and new hand luggage scanners.

The next phase of the development will see the existing security area transformed into duty free shopping.
