A budget airline has launched the cheapest ever flights from Britain to America - starting at just £99 one way.

Iceland's WOW airline has just unveiled the no-frills flight, but there's one catch - you'll have to stop off in Iceland on the way, and it will take more than 10 hours. OK, that's two catches.

The flight back costs £125, making a return trip £224, plus a booking fee of £8.98.

According to the Mirror, WOW's owner, Skuli Mogensen, said: "We're opening the market to a whole new range of travellers who might previously not have been able to afford transatlantic travel.

"The low-cost airline market is scrambling to offer cheap flights to North America and I'm happy we'll be among the first to do so – at a price that will no doubt cause our rivals to re-evaluate their plans."

According to the Daily Telegraph, the airline is launching the new flights next year, with flights from London Gatwick to Boston Logan International Airport starting on 27 March and to Baltimore Washington International, on 4 June. They all include a layover in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik.

Hand luggage of 5kg and 56 x 45 x 25cm is included in the flight fare, but food and drinks onboard will cost extra.

There's also no entertainment provided, so you'll need to pack a tablet or something to keep you - and the kids - amused.

The availability of the £99 seats will be based on demand, and, of course, the airline urges you to book sooner rather than later.

The London to Boston flight will operate five days a week, while the Washington flight offers four services a week.

A return flight on BA to the US on the same date as WOW launches its service to Boston (27 March) costs £612 for the same return trip.
