october uk weather forecast: rain, floods and cooler temperatures

Forecasters have predicted the return of miserable weather for Britain as heavy rain tonight could cause floods in the north of England, southern Scotland and Wales.

Cumbria is likely to see the most rainfall of 60 to 80mm, while other parts of the north and west see 30 to 40mm.

Chief forecaster Leon Brown at The Weather Channel tells AOL Travel: "The rain will move across the Midlands and south-east England on Saturday, followed by much cooler and fresher weather from the North Atlantic. It is expected to feel quite a lot cooler in the south with temperatures 8C or lower than Friday."

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson told the Daily Express that "it will be very windy in parts, it will be quite a shock to the system after the recent dry weather and it will feel noticeably cooler.

"Wind gusts could reach 65mph in the north... [and] gusts of 40mph quite widely."

Leon Brown says that Sunday will bring better weather with sunshine and dry conditions, "but temperatures will be back to normal of 14 and 15C for early October."

Gusts of 70mph are possible for Cornwall, Devon, west Wales and west Scotland on Sunday night.

"They may bring down a few trees and certainly large branches and a lot of leaves," Mr Brown adds. "Local flooding too, with 20 to 30mm likely over the west and 40 to 50mm in west Scotland."

Low pressure will dominate the rest of next week with the jet stream way south to north-west Spain and curving north to France and western Norway.

Leon says we can expect bands of heavy showers, especially over the west with hail and thunder. The south may see a heavier pulse of rain mid-week and it will often be windy. He adds: "Temperatures will feel rather cool so coats and hats to the ready, and beware your brolly doesn't blow inside out!"

Meanwhile, the Met Office recorded the driest September in the UK since records began in 1910.

It said that from 1 to 28 September, the UK received 19.4mm of rain, which is just 20 per cent of the normal amount of rainfall expected for the month. Prior to this, the driest September on record was in 1959 with 23.8mm.
