For the ultimate adventure, go below ground to experience some of the coolest (literally) activities in the world. Enter subterranean rivers, gardens and even whole towns for a day out like no other.

Some of the unbelievable underground adventures you can experience include black water rafting in New Zealand's Waitomo Caves, zip lining at the world's only fully underground zip line course in Kentucky, USA and going 206 metres below ground in a hot air balloon in Croatia (...ok, so you can't actually try that last one, but it was recently achieved by an adrenalin junkie!).

Earlier this year, the world's only underground trampoline opened in Wales and the massive network of bouncy nets in caverns twice the size of St Paul's Cathedral proved that air, water and even overland activities aren't the only ways to have fun.

For those looking for something more gentle yet still exhilarating, Mexico's Xcaret Park is home to underground rivers that are perfect for the whole family to enjoy floating and snorkelling. In London, you can enjoy afternoon tea below ground at the 18th-century Café in the Crypt and there's a whole underground town to explore in Australia. Outback town Coober Pedy is famed for its underground homes, art galleries and shops as well as its opals.
