Seaside visitors in Margate were rather shocked to see a mystery spaceman wandering across the beach right in front of them on Sunday morning.

The 'astronaut' baffled onlookers as he was spotted walking along a concrete spit heading out to sea on Margate beach before turning back and walking across the sand near Marine Terrace.

Hayley Mollart, restaurant supervisor at the Sands Hotel at the Kent resort, said staff on the breakfast shift first spotted him.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: "No one knows why he was there but there were people with cameras with him. It was an unusual sight."

But according to Kent Online, the spaceman was actually part of a new music video shot for the low-fi pop band Elephant, by London-based production company Loveday - Valentine.

Mystery solved. But it's probably not what you expect to see while eating your ice cream.

Margate is a seaside town in the district of Thanet in East Kent, England.

For at least 250 years, Margate has been a leading seaside resort in the UK, drawing Londoners to its beaches, Margate Sands.

It now also boasts the Turner Contemporary art gallery, which occupies a prominent position next to the harbour.

Back in 2012, Margate rubbed shoulders with stunning hotspots like Dubrovnik and Stockholm when to was placed at seventh in the top 10 destinations in the world in the Rough Guide Travel Hot List for 2013 - even coming in higher than Puerto Rico.

According to the Daily Mail, a spokesman for Rough Guides said: "From the Turner Contemporary gallery to the proliferation of other indie art spaces, vintage shops and cute cafes in the Old Town, Margate now offers much more than its golden sands and dilapidated seaside charm.

"The gem on the Isle of Thanet constitutes one of the highlights of the forthcoming Rough Guide to Kent, Sussex and Surrey for many good reasons."
