An eight-year-old boy has been rumbled by airport security trying to smuggle his pet turtle through customs - in his pants.

Congcong Tai's secret was found out when the turtle started moving, and the staff at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, in Guangdong province, China, found the animal in his underwear.

He had spent some time with his grandmother and couldn't bear to leave the turtle behind when he headed home, reports the Shangaiist.

According to the Metro, border guards spokesman Hu Hsieh said: "She (the grandmother) had told him to leave the pet behind but he had disobeyed her and tried to smuggle it on board the plane.

"When the customs officials noticed he was trying to hide something, he tried to cover it up, and when his grandma asked him what he was hiding he tried to cover it up even more."

Luckily for Congcong, kind officials agreed to let the turtle travel in the cargo area, so it went home with him after all.

Meanwhile, last year, a man attempted to sneak his pet turtle past airport security - disguised as a KFC burger.

He discarded the meat filling, popped the turtle between the bun and re-wrapped it before making his way through security.

Staff began to get suspicious when the X-ray scanner picked up on protrusions coming from the burger that looked remarkably like turtle limbs.

When questioned, the passenger said: "There's no turtle in there, just a hamburger... There's nothing special to see inside."

The passenger eventually gave in - and had his pet turtle confiscated before he continued with his travels.
