TV chef Rick Stein is to open his first seafood restaurant in Winchester.

The 67-year-old chef, who owns several restaurants, hotels and shops in Padstow, Cornwall, has chosen the Hampshire city to expand his empire.

Speaking to West Morning News, Stein said: "We have secured a high street position in the town and the restaurant will seat 70 for lunch and dinner.

"I love Winchester; it's steeped in heritage, with beautiful architecture and seems to have a love of great food.

"Our new restaurant is about fresh fish, simply cooked. This is a big and exciting move for us, our first outside Cornwall, and we can't wait to bring our passion for seafood to Winchester."

The restaurant will be named 'Rick Stein' and offer dishes including grilled lobster, turbot hollandaise and slip sole meunière.

According to BigHospitality, Rick's wife Jill and their oldest son Edward will oversee the design of the venue, while their youngest son Charles will supply the wines.

Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, Seán Woodward, said: "It's fantastic to hear that Rick Stein has chosen Winchester as the location for his new restaurant.

"The Rick Stein restaurant will be a really welcome addition to this, attracting people from far and wide to the city and wider Hampshire county."
