A clown had a not-so-funny day when she crashed her car into a utility pole in New Jersey after a school performance.

Suzanne Serio, 68, was adjusting her GPS unit when she swerved off the road and crashed her Toyota into the pole, according to fellow clown Jack 'Poppi T Clown' Erbstein.

The Metro reports that 10 clown colleagues then rallied around to make sure she was ok, all still dressed in their costumes and makeup.

The clowns, part of the non-profit organisation Call Us Clowns, had performed that day at nearby Berkeley Avenue Elementary School.

They had all left in their respective cars, but all stopped to make sure everything was fine.

According to the The Record, the clowns persuaded the woman to go to hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries.

Westwood police Chief Frank Regino said she was taken to the Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley.

While she was generally fine, her car was not so lucky and suffered substantial damage.

Speaking to Fox News, Ms Serio was in high spirits despite the prang. She said: "It ended up being quite amusing for everyone. It ended up giving people a smile."

In fact, she added, when she arrived at the local hospital still dressed in her clown gear, one doctor couldn't help showing off his juggling skills using three vials of insulin.
