Holidaymakers in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, saved a seagull after yobs painted it bright yellow.

The animal was seen struggling to fly by the lifeboat station in the holiday town, and concerned tourists alerted Scarborough Sea Life Centre.

The RSCPA was sent to investigate, and said that although the bird could fly short distances, it would have inevitably died as a result of the damage to its plumage.

It is believed the seagull could have been the victim of a callous Tour de France practical joke.

Sea Life's Lia Bull told the Mirror: "We know there were sheep spray-painted with washable yellow paint to mark the visit of the Tour de France.

"It's likely someone thought it was a clever idea to paint a seagull as well."

The bird is now recovering at a specialist RSPCA wildlife centre in Cheshire and is doing well.

According to SWNS, Lia added: "We hear he's eating hungrily and that the paint is coming off gradually."
