Updated

The summer holidays have arrived and the kids are more than ready for some proper fun and games. This is the perfect time to explore the UK's great outdoors, and all the major attractions around the country are gearing up to welcome their little guests. And it doesn't need to be expensive: the good news is that many host summertime events that are free entry, and many more are offering deals and discounts.

If you're stuck for ideas and want to treat the children this July and August, we've selected some of the best days out for families in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Some of our favourites include the Belfast Hills Heritage Festival and the Robin Hood Festival in Sherwood Forest, both of which promise to come alive with music and theatre. Some of the new attractions the children and adults will love include a visit to London's ArcelorMittal Orbit and Snowdonia's underground trampoline Bounce Below.

Wherever you are, there are plenty of things keep everyone busy over the holidays. See our pick of the best days out for families in Britain this summer and add yours in the comments below if we haven't included it!
