Amy Adams has been hailed a "classy lady" after giving up her first class seat for a soldier who was flying economy.

The American Hustle star flew economy on Delta flight DL1706 from Detroit to Los Angeles on Friday, and said the swap was something she had always wanted to do.

Speaking to Inside Edition, she said: "I didn't do it for attention for myself. I did for attention for the troops."

Amy reportedly noticed a man in uniform at her gate in Detroit, and discreetly asked to switch seats with him.

Her fellow first class passenger, ESPN personality Jemele Hill, told ABC News: "I noticed Ms Adams was in first class and as I was getting seated, I saw the flight attendant guide the soldier to Ms Adams' seat. She was no longer in it, but it was pretty clear that she'd given up her seat for him.

"I was incredibly impressed, and I'm not even sure if the soldier knew who gave him that seat. I guess he will now!"

But the actress reportedly had a quick meeting with the soldier near the cockpit.

According to Today, Jemele added: "I just thought it was incredibly classy and thoughtful.

"I already was a fan of hers, but now I'm a bigger one after today."

The Daily Mail reports that Amy Adams' father was in the military. She was both on a US military base in Italy, and grew up on a base in Colorado.

Ernest Owens, that man who was sitting next to the soldier in economy, ended up having a very starry seat mate instead, and tweeted a pic of the pair together on the flight.

Amy, a five-time Oscar nominee, had been in Detroit filming her new movie Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.
