Man with stolen GPS arrested after calling police when he got lost

A man who had stolen a GPS (Global Positioning System) got himself arrested - because he called police when he got lost.

Andrew James Joffe didn't know a warrant had been issued for his arrest on driving offences when he called the authorities in Polk City, Florida.

The 24-year-old reportedly got lost on rural roads in the early hours of Thursday morning and had feared he was being chased by wild hogs.

Mr Joffe had been walking along the road when he got spooked. Just a few hours earlier, he'd stolen the GPS from a vehicle, along with mobile phones and earrings from a house in Davenport, reports the Independent.

When he called the police, an open warrant had already been issued for his arrest for driving with a suspended or revoked licence.

When officers looked through his bag, they found the GPS was programmed to 'home address', which matched the home in Davenport where the victim was missing a number of goods.

Speaking to the Metro, Grady Judd, Sheriff of Polk County, said: "We have had people with warrants call us to turn themselves in before, but it's unusual for someone with an active warrant, who just burgled a car, to get lost and call us for help.

He added: "In his defence, it does get pretty dark out on Deen Still Road in the middle of the night."
