A commercial pilot was rushed to hospital on Saturday after a balloon of cocaine he had swallowed burst in his stomach.

Stanley Rafael Hill, from Texas, attempted to smuggle 62 balloons of cocaine by swallowing them before his five-hour flight from Colombia to Houston, reports the Daily Mail.

He ingested the bags shortly before boarding his flight, and was travelling as a passenger.

But one of the sacks burst en route, and Mr Hill himself called for help from a Houston hotel shortly after landing at Bush Intercontinental Airport, reports Click2Houston.

It is unclear which airline Mr Hill works for. According to nbcdfw.com, Hill's family said he works for a small regional air carrier and is a father of two.

He is still recovering at a hospital in Houston as he passes the rest of the cocaine balloons.

Mr Hill is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
