Delta flight makes emergency landing after part of plane wing comes off mid-air

A flight from Orlando made an emergency landing in Atlanta after part of the plane's wing went missing.

The Delta flight made a safe landing and officials said a 4ft by 8ft panel from one of the plane's wings was missing, AP reports.

A photo of the wing was posted by a passenger on Reddit and shows the damage.

The user wrote: "This happened to the plane mid-flight."

According to the Daily Mail, Delta spokesman Anthony Black said the missing panel did not impact the Boeing 757's ability to fly or land.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. No injuries were reported.

In December, a Delta Air Lines flight made an emergency landing in Madrid after the passenger plane experienced a hydraulics problem that caused part of a wing to burst open.

Associated Press reports that tyres on the main landing gear of the New York-bound plane deflated as it landed but the plane came to rest safely and there were no injuries.

Passengers on the Boeing 767-300ER took pictures of the plane's damaged wing, showing a compartment panel which had fallen off, and posted the snaps on Twitter.

In an email to The Huffington Post, a Delta spokesperson said: "After receiving indication of a hydraulics issue after departure, the flight crew of Delta flight 415 from Madrid to New York-JFK returned to Madrid.

"Upon landing, tires on the main landing gear deflated and the aircraft came to rest ... safely on the airfield. Buses were dispatched to deplane customers back to the terminal. There are no reports of injuries."
