For years women have suffered the blisters, bunions and sore feet associated with fashionable footwear. But there's good news for girls this year because flats are making a comeback.

Comfy brogues, pumps and embellished trainers have all been on show on the high fashion catwalks, and fashion-forward celebs such as Alexa Chung, Peaches Geldof and Kate Moss have been opting for flats over heels for recent red carpet appearances.

It's a trend that growing numbers of women are happy to latch onto, according to fashion experts, with many ditching the vertiginous heels for a more comfortable footwear choice.

Tamara Sender, fashion analyst at Mintel, revealed that more than three quarters of all consumers now favour 'fit over fashion' in the footwear department, and flats are flying off the high street shelves these days, with more than three-fifths of women polled admitting they had invested in a pair over the last year.

Lorna Hall, head of retail at trend consultancy WGSN, told the Daily Mail: "The reason flat shoes are selling so well is that they go with the androgynous silhouette that is fashionable at the moment.

"Heels look good with dresses, but brogues and flats help you carry off slim-leg trousers and oversized jacket shapes."

And if you're still finding it hard to believe that flats are making a high fashion comeback, even Christian Louboutin, whose red-soled skyscraper heels are a regular site on the red carpet, will be introducing a pair of brogues this spring.
