Catering for a New Year's Eve bash can be an expensive business when it comes to bubbly for your guests, but according to wine experts there's no need to splash serious cash on posh champers this year.

Having tasted 200 brands, experts decided that Aldi's Philippe Michel Cremant Du Jura offers the best value at just £6.99 a bottle.

The 'fantastically crisp and elegant' bottle of bubbly beat a host of more expensive offerings, and it's incredibly reasonable price means Brits can celebrate without putting a sizeable dent in their wallets this New Year.

Second to the budget supermarket's sparkling wine was the £29.99 (normally £39.99) Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV Champagne from Waitrose, described as "consistently rated as one of the finest non-vintage champagnes".

Sainsbury's Champagne Blanc de Noirs Brut NV, a "rich, creamy" blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier priced at £16.49, came in third place.

The poll of wine connoisseurs was carried out by Wotwine, an app that informs consumers as to whether their wine choice is worth more or less than the shelf price.

Co-founder Henry Shelford told the Daily Express: "There are some fantastic bargains to be had over the festive period."
