Benidorm is still the most popular resort for Brits searching for a holiday - even after 50 years.

A new survey by holiday price comparison site Holiday Discount Centre also revealed that Sharm el Sheikh on Egypt's Red Sea is the most searched for long-haul resort, New York the most searched for city break location and Courchevel is the top spot for people looking to book a ski holiday this winter.

"Benidorm has always been a firm favourite with Brits, since way back in the early 60s when the mainstream UK package holiday industry started," said Holiday Discount Centre's managing director Steve Campion.

"Despite being seen as 'unsophisticated' by some, it's remained popular through the years for good value traditional family holidays, as well as more recently increasing its luxury offering.

"With the continued development and investment in leisure attractions, and of course its good year round weather, it's no surprise that so many searches are to find a holiday there in 2014."

The firm found that there are other resorts giving Benidorm a run for its money. Marmaris in Turkey and Playa de las Americas in Tenerife are other popular searches for 2014, as well as Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt, which despite Egypt's political problems seems to still be attracting a lot of interest, possibly due to price cutting by many of the properties to stimulate demand.

"The Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach in Bulgaria is an up and coming resort that we are seeing grow in popularity for 2014," added Steve.
