Pictures of a restaurant selling skewered roast rat in Vietnam is likely to put you off your food rather than get your tummy rumbling.


The slaughtered rats are sold at a village market in Dan Phuong on the outskirts of Hanoi.

In some areas in both Northern Red River delta and Southern Mekong River delta people eat field rat meat, with rat hunters being mostly farmers who capture the small animals for sale in markets.

Around rice harvest is deemed the best time for rat hunting, but in the southern Mekong delta hunting is particularly productive during flood season when rats are escaping from their flooded hearths.
