A bright meteor which lit up the night sky in Indiana on Friday was captured on video.

Footage shows the fireball shooting over the city of Greenwood and the sky turning blue.

Sky News reports that the light appeared like a bolt of lightning shortly before 1am local time.

According to the American Meteor Society, "September has been a busy month for fireballs in the USA" and on Friday it received over 400 reports of a large fireball over the American Midwest.

Witnesses from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin reported seeing a bright light moving across the sky at 7.05am local time on Thursday.

The AMS says: "A fireball is another term for a very bright meteor, generally brighter than magnitude -4, which is about the same magnitude of the planet Venus in the morning or evening sky. A bolide is a special type of fireball which explodes in a bright terminal flash at its end, often with visible fragmentation."

There were no injuries reported.
