David Cameron and his wife Samantha popped into a central London branch of Pizza Express on Friday night - and left a £50 tip for a meal that cost around £45.

The couple had just been to see the West End play, The Audience, where Helen Mirren plays the Queen, and Rufus Wright plays David Cameron.

After heading backstage to meet the cast, the couple headed to Pizza Express - where they have been spotted a number of times - for dinner.

The Prime Minister tucked into a £12.75 rustichella pizza, while Samantha ordered the £10.90 lasagne classica. They shared a bottle of red wine and a portion of dough balls, and Mr Cameron happily posed for a photograph with two female diners.

The couple enjoyed their 'date night' just hours before world leaders flew in for the G8 Summit.

The Mirror reported that one fellow diner said: "You'd never have guessed he was about to host Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin - he seemed chilled out."

While the Daily Mail reports that another diner tweeted that they thought he had saved money by using discount vouchers to pay for meal.
