The economic downturn may have put paid to the annual holiday abroad, but the rise and rise of the 'staycation' is giving UK tourism a welcome boost.

According to a poll by hotel chain Travelodge, the number of Brits staying in Britain this year could rise to 65 per cent, boosting UK tourism by £3.3 billion.

The survey revealed that two out of three families are planning to stay in the UK this summer instead of opting for expensive sunshine getaways, with 42 per cent taking a one-week holiday, 15 per cent enjoying two weeks away, and a further third planning to take three short breaks.

Brits from Wolverhampton, Liverpool, Cardiff, Chelmsford and Manchester were among the most likely to choose a staycation over a holiday abroad.

The increase in the numbers of Brits holidaying in the UK will boost the tourism industry by £3.3 billion compared to last year, according to Travelodge, making the industry as a whole worth £12 billion.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Grant Hearn, Chief Executive of Travelodge, suggested that the surge in staycations part of "our 2012 Olympics legacy gain", and indeed, London topped Cornwall as the country's top destination this year, with Edinburgh and the Lake District close behind.

Mr Hearn said: "During 2012, our capital city was showcased in its true glory to all corners of the UK and the world, and it's a great result that London has been crowned as the top staycation destination for 2013."
