Two planes about to take off clip each other at New York airport

Two passenger planes taxiing before take-off at Newark Liberty International Airport clipped each other.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the left wing of the Scandinavian Airlines plane clipped the tail of the United Airlines ExpressJet as they prepared to take off at the New York airport.

The Oslo-bound Scandinavian Airlines flight was directly behind the ExpressJet flight headed for Nashville and was turning right to get onto another taxiway when its wing clipped the ExpressJet plane's tail, AP reports.

Passengers disembarked after the ExpressJet plane was towed back to the gate and the Scandinavian Airlines aircraft was taxied back.

Officials are investigating the incident.

According to ABC, an ExpressJet statement read: "ExpressJet Flight 4226, operating as United Express, from Newark (EWR) to Nashville (BNA) was on the taxiway in EWR when its tail was contacted by another aircraft.

"All 31 passengers deplaned the aircraft normally and were bused to the terminal where they are being re-accommodated. ExpressJet is working in coordination with officials to determine the cause."
