The horrifying moment a US cargo plane dropped from the sky and crashed to the ground before blowing up at an Afghan air base was caught on camera.

The video shows the Boeing 747-400 appearing to take off but suddenly twisting in the air before falling to the ground and crashing in a fireball.

All seven crew on the plane were killed in the crash at Bagram air base near Kabul.

According to The Aviation Herald, Afghan authorities denied claims that the large civilian cargo aircraft, carrying five military vehicles, was the result of enemy activities.

The seven men killed in the crash were named as pilots Brad Hasler of Trenton, Michigan, and Jeremy Lipka of Brooklyn, Michigan; First Officers Jamie Brokaw, of Monroe, Michigan, and Rinku Summan of Canton, Michigan; loadmaster Michael Sheets of Ypsilanti, Michigan; and maintenance crew Gary Stockdale of Romulus, Michigan and Timothy Garrett of Louisville, Kentucky.

In a statement, Glen Jorger of National Air Cargo said: "Safety is always our top priority at National Airlines. This is a devastating loss for our family and we'll work diligently with authorities to find the cause.

"Most importantly, our thoughts and prayers are with our crewmembers and their families."
