A female tourist in her 30s has been killed by a hippo in Kenya's Great Rift Valley.

The Chinese woman was allegedly trying to take pictures of a baby hippo, when its mother attacked and crushed her.

The animals had strayed from Lake Naivasha and wandered into the compound of the hotel where the woman was staying, according to Standard Media.

The incident occurred at the Lake Naivasha Country Club, where the woman had checked in on the very same day.

At around 9pm, she reportedly saw the young hippo, and went outside to take pictures, reports Travel Mole.

Osman Ibrahim, the warden in charge at Hellsgate National Park, told Standard Media: "The information we have is that the Chinese tourist started taking pictures of the young hippo and she was attacked by the mother.

"She was seriously injured on the waist and neck and was rushed to a nearby private hospital where she was pronounced dead."

According to iol.co.za, wildlife officials shot the hippo mother dead following the attack.
