A British man has died at an Egyptian holiday resort after reportedly drowning while swimming in the sea.

According to the BBC, local police said the 50-year-old man drowned off the Red Sea coast at popular tourist resort Sharm el-Sheikh.

Sky News reports that a British embassy spokeswoman in Cairo did not give any further detail on the circumstances surrounding the death.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: 'We can confirm the death of a British national in Egypt on 22 February. We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.'

Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the main Red Sea resorts attracting millions of tourists each year.
