Video: It's raining spiders in Brazil

Updated

While we're all bitterly complaining about the sleet and snow in the UK at the moment, spare a thought for the people of the southern Brazilian town of Santo Antonio da Platina, where the skies are filled with SPIDERS.

This video shows a rather creepy phenomenon: thousands of spiders dangling from a blanket web from the sky.

Brazilian news outlet G1 interviewed a local biologist who identified the creatures as Anelosimus eximius, a "social spider known" for its massive colonies that create blankets of webs.

Apparently, similar behaviour can be spotted in Chicago, where each year the city experiences an influx of "flying spiders", which spin webs into balloon-like formations and float in the air. It gets so bad that some hotels warn guests to keep their windows shut! Not sure we fancy that...
