Footage captures passengers' horror as plane makes emergency landing

New footage of the moments before a Boeing 747 was forced to make an emergency landing in Warsaw, Poland, shows terrified passengers assuming the brace position as they prepare to crash.

The plane was flying from Newark, New Jersey to Warsaw, Poland in November 2011, when an equipment failure meant that all its landing gear failed. As a result, the pilot was forced to 'belly flop' onto the tarmac and skid along the runway without wheels or brakes.

The Daily Mail reports that the plane was carrying 230 passengers, some of whom filmed the scenes in the cabin in the moments before the plane landed.

Incredibly, the plane landed safely and no one was injured, even though a fire broke out in one of the engines. One of the passengers even said it was one of the smoothest landings he had ever experienced.

Before landing, the plane was forced to circle Warsaw for an hour, in order to dump excess fuel, as the crew repeatedly tried to solve the problem with the landing gear. Ground crews prepared for a crash landing and the airport was closed to all other flights. Fire crews sprayed the runway in foam in an attempt to stop fire breaking out.

Once the plane landed safely, passengers left the plane via inflatable chutes. The captain, Tadeusz Wrona, has been hailed a hero by Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowsk.
