Scunthorpe, the 'Industrial Garden Town' of North Lincolnshire, has received the dubious honour of being crowned the UK's most unromantic destination in a new poll.

It seems that being home to the largest steel processing centre in the country wasn't enough to bring out the British public's romantic side as it beat Bradford and Blackpool into second and third place to claim the top spot with 21 per cent of the votes.

The Lake District (pictured, above), with its combination of poetry and scenery saw it top the poll as the most romantic destination with 30 per cent of the votes. Cornwall and The Cotswolds coming in second and third place.

The poll was conducted by Hotels.com in the run up to Valentine's Day. It asked its visitors to vote for their most and least romantic places to visit in the UK.

A spokesman for the Hotels.com said: "We hope our list will prove inspirational to those looking to plan a last-minute romantic - or maybe unromantic - get away."

Some, however, aren't particularly impressed with Scunthorpe's latest accolade and have been quick to defend the town.

One North Lincolnshire council spokesman told local news site This is Scunthorpe: "We feel the perception is a little unfair. With internationally renowned restaurants such as Winteringham Fields, stately homes such as Normanby Hall and a Championship Golf course and spa resort from Q-Hotels on our doorstep, Scunthorpe really is a hidden gem."
