Britain set for 'total whiteout' as snow and gales hit again
Much of the UK is set for another Big Freeze as fresh snow and gales caused disruption again on Tuesday morning.
The BBC reports that more than 50 schools have closed in Northern Ireland and Scotland, while Manchester Airport and Belfast City Airport are experiencing delays.
Snow fell through the night in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, with some places on higher ground blanketed in up to 4in.
The Met Office told Aol Travel: "We've had some snow and ice overnight, in line with the warnings we put out on Monday. At 10am on Tuesday morning there was 14cm of snow at Eskdalemuir in Dumfriesshire, 12cm at Aviemore in Inverness-shire, and 10cm at Drumalbin in Lanarkshire.
"In England, we saw 7cm in Northumberland at Redesdale Camp, 5cm at Spadeadam in Cumbria, and a couple of centimetres in Bingley, West Yorkshire. There was also 1cm in Waddington, Lincolnshire, and Shawbury, Shropshire.
"It has also been windy, with gusts of 60-70mph around the coast in south west England."
There is more white stuff on the way, and the Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow and ice.
Gale-force winds have been affecting driving conditions across the UK, while temperatures could plummet as low as -15C throughout the week.
According to the Daily Express, much of Britain can expect showers, frosts, freezing temperatures and icy roads.
But the North and central England will be the worst hit by snow, expecting Arctic gales and blizzards.
Around 2,000 gritters took to the roads across the country on Monday night, while Heathrow - which had to cancel 1,000 flights because of bad weather last month - is on standby with snowploughs.
Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, told the newspaper: "The snow is set to arrive through Monday night and into Tuesday.
"This is a very severe blast from the Arctic with winds easily touching 100mph and up to 10 inches of snow in parts.
"In the winds it is going to feel very cold, with -15C very possible, and this is how it looks for the rest of the week."
