A man died yesterday after falling on Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain.

BBC News reports that the man, who was from England and in his 20s, was climbing alone on Tower Ridge, when he fell into a gully below.

A group of climbers, who were in the area the time, saw him fall at around 11am, and Lochaber Mountain Rescue dispatched a rescue helicopter.

A spokesman for the Northern Constabulary told BBC News: "A male climber fell from tower ridge into Tower Gully, Ben Nevis.

"Lochaber Mountain Rescue were contacted and with the assistance of Royal Navy Search and Rescue the man was rescued from Tower Gully, however, he had sustained fatal injuries. He is believed to have fallen a distance of about 100 metres."

The Scotsman reports that Tower Ridge is one of several ridges protruding north-west form the summit plateau of Ben Nevis, which stands at 1,344 metres.

John Stevenson, team leader of Lochaber Mountain Rescue told The Scotsman: "We think he was climbing on his own. We do not know which part of the Tower he fell from - but he was seen by two other climbers fall a long way."
