And the safest airline in the world is...

Got a fear of flying? You might be keen to know which airline has been named the safest in the world, then...

The accolade went to Finnair in the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre's (JACDEC) annual safety index, which measures safety in the aviation industry.

Finnair is Finland's flag carrier and is the fifth oldest airline in the world; it has had no fatal or hull-loss accidents since 1963.

Air New Zealand came in at a very respectable second place, while others in the top 10 included Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and Virgin Australia.

British Airways was the only UK airline to feature in the list, coming in at number 10.

The JACDEC says its list is "based on our annual safety calculations which include all hull loss accidents and serious incidents in the last 30 years of operations in relation to the revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) performed in the same time".

The top 10 safest airlines in the world list is:

1. Finnair
2. Air New Zealand
3. Cathay Pacific
4. Emirates
5. Etihad
6. Eva Air (Taiwan)
7. TAP (Portugal)
8. Hainan Airlines
9. Virgin Australia
10. British Airways
