Birmingham Airport to be renamed after Ozzy Osbourne?

Birmingham Airport could follow in the footsteps of Liverpool and Belfast, and be renamed after a local star.

Bosses are considering renaming the city after Black Sabbath's legendary frontman, Ozzy Osbourne.

Jim Simpson, the Big Bear Music boss who discovered the heavy metal band, told the Mirror: "I believe it would be a masterstroke that would instantly confound the cynics.

"How does The Ozzy Osbourne International Airport resonate? The message says, 'Hey world, we are proud of our own'.

"Ozzy might not always have been a paragon of virtue, but he is a genuine, flesh and blood Brummie."

Councillor Philip Parkin confirmed talks had taken place to honour Black Sabbath by changing the name of Birmingham International Airport.

He told the Birmingham Mail: "It's an interesting idea and I've got an open mind but I think something like that would need to be consulted on fairly widely because it's a significant part of our infrastructure.

"I would be interested to know what people thought about that as an idea.

"I still feel in general we need to be making the most of the talent we have got and did have in this city and with something like this we have to ask people their opinion."

Liverpool's Speke Airport was renamed John Lennon Airport to honour the Beatles star, and Belfast's airport is now called George Best Belfast City Airport after the footballing legend.

Other airports around the world have also named airports in honour of iconic stars, including the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and the John Wayne Airport in Orange County.
