A teenage boy from Scotland who collapsed and died while hiking with his father in Western Australia has been named.

Ewan Louis Williamson became dehydrated while walking along Badjirrajirra Creek, about 20km south of Exmouth, on Friday.

The 14-year-old arrived in Australia in mid-December to visit his father who lives there and the pair went to the Cape Range National Park on a hiking trip.

Ewan, from Largs in North Ayrshire, collapsed four hours into the hike with little water or shade, where temperatures in the region reached well over 40C.

His father called emergency services, which arrived and performed CPR on the boy before he was rushed to hospital, but he died on Friday evening at Exmouth Hospital.

A report is being prepared for the coroner and police said the circumstances leading to his death and how he died are yet to be determined.

According to The Australian, it is understood Ewan's mother is flying to Western Australia.
