The research, carried out by the NHS in North Somerset, analysed data on 880 overweight men and women who attended either Weight Watchers, Slimming World or Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs.

After 12 weekly sessions, those who followed the Weight Watchers plan lost an average of 12lb - significantly more than the 9.3lb shed by Slimming World members, and a little more than the 11lb weight loss seen by Rosemary Conley fans.

Furthermore, the researchers found that Weight Watchers members were 81 per cent more likely to shift 5 per cent of their weight than dieters who attended Slimming World sessions.

The authors of the study, whose report was published in the Journal of Public Health, believe the key to Weight Watchers' success may be down to its easy-to-follow plan, in which dieters learn about healthy eating and follow a points-based system of scoring food.

Previous research by the Medical Research Council found that Weight Watchers regulars, whose sessions were paid for by the NHS, lost an average of 15lb a year.
