Man dies and one injured after dinghy capsizes 300 yards off Southend coast

A pensioner has died and another is in hospital after their dinghy capsized in the sea 300 yards off Thorpe Bay, Southend.

The two men, aged 71 and 73, were pulled from the water by Southend RNLI after Thames Coastguard received a number of calls from worried members of the public.

The rescue team found one man clinging to the side of the boat, while the other had begun to drift away in the current, according to the BBC.

Both were treated on the shore for up to an hour, but the 73-year-old died at the scene.

A spokesman for Thames Coastguard told the Daily Mail that the two men may have been heading towards a boat on the mooring, but added: "We cannot speculate on the cause of death at this time."
