A man and his dog were killed after a car hit them as they walked on a pavement in Lichfield.

The BBC reports that Staffordshire Police said the man had been on the pavement in Burton Road, Streethay, when he was hit by a small dark-coloured car.

The car did not stop and carried on towards Lichfield city centre. The man and his dog were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Daily Mail, a 21-year-old man was arrested in the city on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and taken into custody by Staffordshire Police for an interview.

The collision is said to have happened at around 7:40am.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: 'Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save the man who was confirmed dead at the scene.'

Neighbours living close to the scene reacted with shock to the incident.

Mary Powell, 61, told the Daily Mail: 'It's such a tragedy. It's the last thing you'd expect to happen while enjoying a morning walk with your dog.'
