A disaster was luckily avoided on Saturday after an All Nippon Airways flight overshot the runway at Shonai Airport in Japan by 66 metres - because the automatic braking system failed.

According to news.com.au, none of the 161 passengers and six crew members were injured, and there was no damage to the plane.

The pilot managed to use the manual brakes, and overran by 66 metres, only stopping after entering a grassy area.

Although there were no injuries, Japan's transport ministry reportedly considered it a serious incident that could have caused a disaster.

Investigators were sent to the scene, but the airline has not commented on the incident.

Back in November, the terrifying moment a plane skidded off the runway and crashed through a retaining wall in Brazil was caught on video.

The crash occurred at Congonhas Airport in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

According to the Herald Sun, the captain suffered serious injuries in the crash, but his two passengers escaped unharmed.
