Essex Police are trying to trace a woman who was sexually assaulted while unconscious in a hotel on the holiday island of Corfu in Greece.

The BBC reports that a video was handed to Essex Police showing the woman, who is thought to be in her late teens, on a bed in the resort of Kavos.

Her attacker is seen cutting off her underwear and carrying out a serious sex attack on the woman.

It is believed the victim is British and that the assault took place while she passed out on a hotel bed after a drunken night out in the Kavos area in the early hours of 30 July.

The Daily Mirror reports that the 'shocking' assault is among more routine holiday clips on the tape.

Detectives 'strongly believe' the victim is from the UK, but Detective Inspector Hayley King said they don't know 'when the young woman returned to the UK or which airport she flew back into.'

'The offence took place in a hotel room. We don't though know which hotel it is in Kavos, and there are many,' she said.

After months of investigating the footage, detectives have now decided to make a public appeal in a bid to trace the victim.

Officers believe the attacker was a fellow Briton who was holidaying with a group of friends.

To help the victim identify herself, police have said she was wearing a number of coloured wrist bands from local clubs.
