A plane has crashed into the Indian Ocean off the Comoros Islands - and all 29 people on board survived.

The Embraer jet went down about 200 metres from Moroni airport just five minutes after taking off on Tuesday.

A senior military official on board the plane had noticed the aircraft fuel was leaking "like an open tap" upon take-off, and alerted the pilot, who decided to turn back to the airport.

But he was unable to make it back on time, and the plane plunged into the sea.

According to Reuters, Abu Mohamed Ali, director general of Civil Aviation for the Comoros Islands, said all 25 passengers and four crew members were safe.

The pilot suffered head injuries while the rest were unhurt, and reports said local fishermen appeared to have led the rescue operation.

According to CNN, the Inter-lles plane was bound for Ankouan, another island in the Comoros.

An investigation is being carried out into the cause of the crash.
