The office party is supposed to be a time to relax and enjoy a meal and a few drinks with colleagues before the Christmas break. But for women across the country, the party prep turns into a full-time job.

A new survey has revealed that the average woman spends 12 hours searching for the right outfit, while one in five doubles that time, taking at least two days on getting the dress, shoes and accessories just right.

In fact for many, the LBD diet that started back in October is just the beginning, as 25 per cent of the 2,000 women surveyed confessed to scouring magazines and researching on-trend looks before even thinking about hitting the high street.

Some 11 per cent began planning their outfit six weeks before the bash, while a highly organised three per cent started their preparation as early as October.

Most girls try on four outfits (one in ten will try more than eight) before splashing an average of £68.79 on the perfect party dress.

And the preparation doesn't stop there -13 per cent of those polled admitted to spending five or more hours getting ready on the day itself.

Given the time and effort most ladies put into their office party prep, it's hardly surprising that the survey, for Lambrini, revealed just under 50 per cent preferred the getting ready to the actual do.

Lorna Tweed, from the drinks brand, told the Daily Mail: "Everyone loves a good Christmas party. It's a chance for us to dress up and look our best - the perfect time to impress a special someone or get lucky under the mistletoe.

"However, for many of us it seems this build-up is better than the actual event itself."
