A 12-year-old boy has been reported missing on the island of Porquerolles, just off the coast of southern France.

The Daily Mail reports that the boy, who was on holiday with his parents, was alone when he went on a bike ride around the island yesterday afternoon.

He was last seen at 6pm and his bike was found near a coastal path.

Emergency services began a search of the island and the sea at around 9pm, but adverse weather conditions forced them to stop at 5am.

Prosecutor at the port of Toulon Xavier Tarabeaux said that the boy's disappearance was linked to extreme weather and he vanished during a storm "as bad as any which occurs only a couple of times every 10 years".

The boy's bike was damaged, and its chain had been derailed.

The search was due to resume at dawn today.
