A South West Trains worker at Surbiton station has been injured in a horrific accident in which the body of a man who jumped in front of a train bounced off the track and hit him.

The guard was treated for leg injuries after the body of Shathan Sritharan, 27, from Walthamstow, hit him t the station in Surrey.

The incident happened on a train running from Portsmouth Harbour to London Waterloo.

The Surbiton People reports that the fatality occurred at 3.40pm on 19 March.

A witness from the scene told the paper that onlookers were "in complete shock and looked like they'd seen a ghost".

According to the Daily Mail, paramedics also treated a second patient for minor leg injuries and took him to Kingston Hospital.

Around 2,000 South West Train staff are specially trained to identify and approach people contemplating suicide.

A South West Trains spokesperson told the Daily Mail: "We are committed to trying to reduce the number of suicides across our network and have launched a five-year partnership with the Samaritans which aims to reduce the number of suicides on the railways by 20 per cent by 2015.

"We recognise the impact that any fatality can have on our drivers and front-line staff and we will continue to provide any support we can for them."
