The Northern Lights have been putting on spectacular displays in the north of England and Scotland in recent days, and we simply couldn't resist sharing this beautiful image of Derwentwater near the Cumbrian town of Keswick in the Lake District.

According to NASA, the sun is in its most active phase in its 11 year cycle, which is why we're being treated to so many amazing shows.

The lights are usually seen around the Arctic Circle, but a geomagnetic storm has sent charged solar particles as far away as northern England, where they react with the Earth's atmosphere.

Last week, they were clearly visible in Aberdeenshire, Scotland (see below).
