Video: Group of strangers save drowning woman after car crashes into ocean

A group of around 30 strangers joined forces to save an elderly woman after she lost control of her car and crashed into the ocean.

Ursula Nixon, 84, had become trapped in her car after she lost control of it, before ploughing through two fences and straight into the ocean in Portland Harbour, Maine.

One of the rescuers, Katie Nelson, said she dropped her lunch and dashed into the water to help Ms Nixon out of the car, which appeared to be sinking at a very fast rate.

According to the Metro, she said: "I just remember looking in at her and there was water all in the front of the car and she was in the front seat,.

"I said, 'Hi I'm Katie,' and she's like, 'I don't want to die in here, I'm going to drown.' And I'm like, 'No, no you're not. You're going to grab my hands and we're going to pull you out'."

Another rescuer, Robert Slaving, helped take the woman to shore, where local firefighters placed her in a safety harness and hoisted her back onto dry land.

Luckily, Ms Nixon only suffered minor injuries to her leg and eye, while all the rescuers are fine after some were treated at the scene for hypothermia.
