Two tornadoes hit New York City

Two tornadoes hit New York City's borough of Queens and Brooklyn yesterday, damaging homes and causing power blackouts.
BBC News reports that the first storm struck Breezy Point on Queen's Rockaway Peninsula. Winds of up to 70mph tore rooves off cabanas at the Breezy Point Surf Clubs and witnesses reported that electricity pylons were uprooted and waste bins were thrown up in the air.

Minutes later the second, more powerful, tornado - with winds reaching 110mph - hit Brooklyn's Canarsie area, damaging several homes and trees.
No injuries were reported, but the storms meant that the US Open Tennis tournament was suspended as police ordered the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows to be evacuated.
Other parts of New York were hit by heavy rains and thunderstorms and the National Weather Service warned that more tornadoes were possible.
