Workers have been rescued after a boat got swallowed up by an enormous sinkhole in Louisiana.

The 400ft deep sinkhole is expanding and the workers were there in an attempt to clean up the diesel in the area.

They were in a boat tied to a tree when the entire area below the tree was sucked into the sinkhole.

Kim Torres, spokeswoman for the Office of Emergency Preparedness, told ABC News: "It has expanded 50 feet and during that expansion there were workers that were working on the cleanup of the diesel."

The workers were successfully rescued by an airboat, and were uninjured.

The hole is about 526ft by 640ft in Assumption Parish, Louisiana.

There was a mandatory evacuation for residents of about 150 homes in the area.

Officials are not certain what caused the massive sinkhole, but believe it could be related to a nearby salt cavern owned by the Texas Brine Company.
